If you’ve ever had your car or van in for a service and been told that you need a timing belt or chain replacement, then you’re not alone. In fact, you’re not alone and you’re also probably not entirely sure what they are. Fret not, welcome to the right place.

Down at Timing Chain Gatwick, we spend most of our time under the bonnets of cars and van,s where timing belts and chains sit at the heart of the action. So, whether you are driving a Ford Transit EcoBlue, a BMW 320d, or a faithful old Fiesta, they are an integral part of how your engine functions.

Ok, but what’s the difference between a timing belt and a timing chain? And why should you care? We’re going to find out.

What Is a Timing Belt?

A timing belt is a reinforced rubber belt which keeps the camshaft and crankshaft in an engine rotating at precisely the same time. This synchronisation means that the engine’s valves open and shut at exactly the right time during each cylinder’s intake stroke and exhaust stroke.

  • Material: Usually made of rubber and high-tensile fibres (commonly Kevlar).
  • Location: Timing belts are external and easier to access.
  • Maintenance: Requires regular replacement (commonly every 60,000 to 100,000 miles)
  • Failure: Snapping usually causes catastrophic engine damage

What Is a Timing Chain?

Timing chains do exactly the same job as belts, but as the name suggests, they are made of metal and look more like a bicycle chain. Timing chains are fully enclosed inside the engine and lubricated by engine oil.

  • Material: Steel or similar alloys
  • Location: Timing chains are internal inside the engine block.
  • Maintenance: Designed to last the lifetime of the engine, but not necessarily “lifetime” as is commonly thought
  • Failure: Stretch, skip teeth or snap, often with a warning, rattling or poor engine performance

When your timing system starts to wear, you will need to replace it eventually. If you have a timing belt, you can ignore it at your peril as it will snap, usually resulting in serious engine damage, often bent valves, damaged pistons, or a trashed cylinder head.

Timing chains are a different story. Many owners will be told it’s “lifetime”, when in fact it’s not. Chains can and do stretch over time, with or without rattling, and they do wear out, especially if oil changes are neglected or the vehicle is subjected to hard use (commercial vans often fall into this category, the Ford Transit EcoBlue being a prime example).

Some Ford EcoBlue vans use wet belts, timing belts that run inside the engine oil. This combines all the negatives of both a belt and a chain and makes for an even more finicky system, especially when oil changes are neglected.

What does My Van Have?
Don’t know whether your van uses a belt, chain, or wet belt? Drop us a call. At Timing Chain Gatwick, we’ve seen and worked on them all, from Fords to VWs, BMWs to Peugeots. We will be able to spot the difference between a chain, belt, or wet belt and let you know what you should be expecting in terms of maintenance and repair.

Some examples:

  • Ford Transit Custom 2.0L EcoBlue – Wet belt
  • BMW 320d (N47 engine) – Timing chain (one of the most notorious for stretching/rattling)
  • VW Transporter T5 2.5L – Timing belt
  • Peugeot Boxer – Belt or chain, depending on model and year

When Should You Replace It?
Timing Belts: Most OEM’s suggest every 60,000–100,000 miles or 5–7 years

Timing Chains: No fixed interval but should be inspected after 100,000 miles or if experiencing symptoms

Wet Belts: Ford recommends replacement at as little as 100,000 miles or 10 years, whichever comes first

Don’t Wait Until It Snaps
We’ve seen far too many vans come through our workshop with major damage that could’ve been avoided had it been looked at sooner. A slight rattle, engine warning light, or just “feels a bit off” are all good reasons to get it inspected sooner rather than later.
